• Pretty in Plum // Anchorage baby photography // model call

It is so important as an artist to always be learning, growing and practicing. Baby photography is no different from any other art form – and the more we practice, the better we get! So whenever I have a new technique, pose, wrap or in this case, some new props and colors, I love to put out a model call to get into my groove.

Sweet baby Sarah came into the studio at 1 week old to let me dust off my holiday vacation rust, and photograph my new plum backdrop.

I fell in love with this color combo – the deep rich purples and bright spring greens – I’m a little bit obsessed with it.

Getting settled into the studio, like settling into any new space has its challenges – so having a few babes come in to let me practice the lighting and flow is a dream! But I’m loving having so much more space, and being in downtown Anchorage is so fantastic!

Now all I need is more storage for my bazillion props and blankets, headbands and hats.

    baby steps…

    (see what I did there…)

The toes! Oh those baby toes! I don’t know what it is about newborn feet but i always catch the cutest little detail shots of their tiny features.

And speaking of baby details – those squishy lips and squishy cheeks! Her little face is just so precious!

  • Baby Logan // Anchorage newborn photographer

I have been bestie’s with baby Logan’s auntie for ages. She is my person I call when I need someone to set me straight – or if I have a random opening in my schedule for a drink. She’s there.

So when Logan’s mom let me know the newborn photographer she used with her girls had stopped photographing babes, I was super excited to be able to create images of her newest baby boy!

And isn’t he just adorable?! He truly looks like a baby doll – i mean, those perfect little features! So precious!

Baby Logan gave me a run for my money. He was definitely not the sleepiest of babies. Sometimes littles one just have their own plans for their day. I am frequently asked the question by clients – what happens if my baby won’t sleep!? Well, I promise, even if your baby wants to stay awake, I will still be able to create beautiful photographs with you! You would never know that from our 3 hours session Logan slept for MAYBE 20 minutes. Because truly – that’s all I need!

I love all the blues we pulled into his session – that fluffy little nest kind of makes me want to curl up and take a nap too.

And since Grandma came along to hang out and help with his big sisters – we had to pull her in for a shot too!

Enjoy! And try not to catch baby fever looking at these… I dare you!

  • Da Capo Choir // Community Photography

My wonderful friend and Pastor at Christ Community Church (c3AK), Tracy Simmons hit me up a few months ago about this amazing community choir that his high school aged son is part of. These are some super talented kids – doing their music thing with an amazing dedicated volunteer director, Sam Struempler. Sam teaches at Goldenview Middle School btw.

This group needed some “Alaskan” group images to submit for an invitational competition. In the choral world, that’s a big deal. Being from Alaska is kind of a novelty. It’s very romanticized, in a survivalist kind of way. I’ve gotten ALL the crazy questions – from what living in igloos is like to tonton survival tips – yes, I said tonton. Go watch Empire Strikes Back.

So when someone says they need ‘Alaska’ I get it.

With a group of 20+ teens, in not very warm weather and only about 30 minutes of time – I definitely had a challenge. But we found a convenient mountain vista location and got some lovely group shots of these talented kids! They were so cooperative and kind. Truly, they were a pleasure to hang out with and to photograph!

For the record – I did ask them to serenade me – and I was cracking up over their selection of the Little Einstein theme song. Brilliant!

  • Cake Smash for Grown Ups // Anchorage Portrait Photographer

When this fabulous lady contacted me about celebrating her 35th birthday with a good old fashioned grownup cake smash I was SUPER excited! I have known Ashley for several years, and even had the pleasure of photographing her wedding many years ago (back when I used to photograph weddings…) Also – I love this recent trend of adult cake smash sessions. I know it’s cute to see a little one having their first taste of cake and making a giant mess. But I think we often forget to continue to celebrate ourselves over the years.

Birthdays are a great opportunity to take stock of our lives – and remember to celebrate all of our accomplishments! Even if we aren’t doing exactly what we thought we would be doing at a certain point in our lives (life can definitely be a roller coaster!) Taking a peek back to see how far we really have come is so good for us.

Ashley and I popped into a local Anchorage park and definitely got a few strange looks from people walking their dogs. One poor fellow actually tripped and fell – he was so busy staring at us he forgot to watch where he was going! Which, to be honest, made us laugh even harder.

You add a little champagne and it’s a party! My little tip to you though – champagne through a straw – not so easy…

But happy birthday and cheers to 35 miss Ashley – you make it look good, that’s for sure!

  • Baby Tirzah // Anchorage Newborn Photographer

What a sweet, sweet little baby girl! Baby Tirzah was one of the best sleepers I’ve had in my studio to photograph – and considering she was already over a month old when she came to me – it was an absolute dream!

I had the pleasure of being the second shooter photographing her parents wedding here in Anchorage, several years ago – and it was SUCH a pleasure to reconnect with them and have the opportunity to photograph their family again – now with all 3 of their little ones!

They are absolutely the sweetest family – and the boys are just adorable with their little sis!

I hope you enjoy how delicious this little baby girl is!

  • Kindergarten at Polaris // Anchorage Portrait Photographer

For those of you who don’t know my oldest started Kindergarten this year – she did! We were absolutely over the moon excited to get into the lottery for Polaris. I am SUCH a fan of the Optional program – especially the no-homework for Elementary mind set. Let the kids be kids!

And Torah is thriving and loving it. She even had a boy give her his phone number already… But that’s another story…

Every year the yearbook staff at Polaris takes adorable pictures of the kinders in a high school graduation cap and gown. It’s so big and they are so small – and it’s so cute! So as a Kinder mom – of course I had to volunteer to assist with these milestone pics!

While I won’t share all of the other smiling little faces here (because privacy! Obviously!) here is my little lady looking WAY too grown up! Go check out the Yearbook staff’s page –  if you are a Polaris parent, and specifically a Kinder parent, you’ll receive a digital copy of your little one’s image along with your yearbook purchase! Win!

I’m am already getting a little emotional picturing a side by side image of this in 13 years…

  • Alaska at it’s finest // Anchorage Maternity Photographer

Maternity photography in Alaska is such a beautiful thing. We have the most amazing scenery, and even if you don’t want to compete with a baby bump, you can definitely showcase it with some gorgeous views.

This lovely couple have been friends of ours for quite some time – and they have always been dog people – which I can get behind, because I love dogs! When they called to tell me they were finally expecting a human baby this fall I was over the moon excited for them!

They are avid hikers/campers so obviously we HAD to incorporate that into their maternity photos. And we had a beautiful Anchorage evening to hike up a short ways to grab some gorgeous mountain scenery – with the puppies of course!

Sidenote: Alaskans come prepared – dad definitely had his bear gun loaded and ready, JUST in case! No wildlife risks for this family! Even with the dogs along, we definitely had other hikers warn us of some recent bear sightings.

But this is why we live in Alaska – because this is the view, basically from our back door. Can you beat this? I can’t wait to meet their little lady in October – and I know these images will be a beautiful reminder of their patience in awaiting her arrival!

  • Baby Emmalyn // Anchorage Newborn Photography

I think I might say this in every post – but one of my favorite things about being a custom photographer is getting to know families and finding out what they are passionate about.

Being in Alaska, I certainly meet lots of clients who are passionate about hunting and fishing (i mean – it’s our way of life!) – and this adorable family was absolutely Alaskan! Not only is dad a fisherman, he can tie some mean flies! I think he was secretly stoked to be able to tie some really fun and colorful flies JUST for baby Emmalyn’s newborn session. And – I LOVE the images that we created!

Baby Emmalyn rocked her newborn photos – and I was so excited to share them!

Side Note: safety is ALWAYS a top priority for me. I’m a mom, and a super careful/cautious/safety police type mom. I live by the ‘better safe than sorry’ motto, especially when photographing little ones! Images where babies heads are straight up are almost always composite images! Dad was a great helper, and you can see on of the “before” images from this session over on my in studio info page. Because no image is worth any kind of injury to a baby.

I also love all the creams and neutral colors that we used – these newborn images will look beautiful anywhere!

  • The Boys // Anchorage Family Photography

Lifestyle family photography is my jam. I was so excited after meeting with these boys, to create some family photographs with them! I especially loved how honest they were with me. Our conversation went something like this:

dad: “We love your work. It’s beautiful. But… we’re just not the sort of people who are traipsing around in a field somewhere with scenic vistas of Alaska in the background…”

me: (laughing) “yeah. I get that. So let’s talk about what kind of family you ARE.”

We planned out a super fun session that was perfect for them. They wanted to try a few things they had never done before together  (go karting and mini golf at Roadrunner!) and end with something they do every week together (hang out time at our local Anchorage Barnes and Noble.) After all that I did make them stand in an alley so that I could capture a couple of scenic urban Anchorage vistas… or whatever. But they still brought their own personality to those – ‘let’s do action shots!’ and I LOVED it!

What made their session so special to me was that they WERE so honest! Every family wants to be seen in their best light – i get it! I do the same! But there is something so refreshing about just being yourself – and allowing your family photography to reflect that.

I got to do my job in the way I love to do it most. Allow a family to follow their joy – while I just hang out and capture it.

And also – the photographs are great!
