  • Day in the Life // Anchorage Family Photography

So if you remember – back when I launched my new branding for Evoke, we did a session give away – a Day in the Life family photography session to be exact! And the winners of my launch contest were SO much fun! We had a lovely summer morning to photograph their beautiful family routine at their Anchorage home.

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing this family a few times in the past – so it was awesome to get the opportunity to hang with them in their element and create some memories for them just doing their thing.

We started out with breakfast (obviously the start of most family days!) and then moved to getting dressed – and since it was such a beautiful morning, a little play in the yard, with their CHICKENS! They have chickens. I love it. So Alaskan!

The kids were definitely in their zone. They had a blast really putting on a show for me – which was adorable and provided some amazing photographic moments.

This is what I love about Day in the Life sessions – the opportunity to document the life of a family – in their own element – and create beautiful, meaningful photographs of the honest, and simple moments of life. Nothing fake – nothing posed. Just play. routine – and the magic of the smallest moments.

  • Family Photography in Anchorage, Ak

When I was growing up we always hated having to go out in the yard and letting my mom take our pictures. And to be fair – the pictures were always terrible.

BUT – they are a fantastic memories – even if they are blurry, underexposed, and half of us are rolling our eyes. The images definitely captured the reality of the moment – and I love them for that!

Fast forward to 2016. I have met with so many families who don’t have any lasting photographs together! So whenever a family contacts me about photographing them, I’m so excited!

This absolutely beautiful family incorporated 4 generations into their family photography session!

With little ones, it can be so much easier to photograph close to home. Anchorage is such a lovely city – its easy to find a place that is not only scenic, but also where kids a comfortable to play and be themselves.

  • A sunny day in Seattle // Family Photographer

I always love getting the opportunity to catch up with clients that have left Alaska. I am so often in Seattle, I mean, Anchorage is basically a suburb of Seattle… so I love that I can pop down for a quick session to take advantage of the gorgeous spring!

The weather could not have worked out better for this session. Obviously the Seattle rains can be unpredictable, and a bit of a gamble for an outdoor cake smash – but all worked out perfectly and we had a gorgeous spring day – full of sun!

I loved how sweet the girls were with the cake – sharing and just happy to be having cake! Who doesn’t love cake?

It was an absolutely perfect shoot from start to finish! I’m ready to head back!

  • 7 months // Baby Milestone Session // Alaska baby photographer

So often as parents we get into this mindset that we need to document babies lives based on their age. But truly – babies first year is about milestones! Every baby sits at a different age, crawls at a different age, and even walks at a different age!

I love capturing the sitting up milestone – babies still have those adorable rolls that disappear quickly after they start to crawl! And they will actually sit still – because they can’t crawl away quite yet! It’s such a fun and adorable moment to capture in time.

And of course- it’s the perfect time to get the whole family in to get some sibling as well as mom & dad images!

Baby Lincoln was a dream – so chunky and perfect! He sits up like a champ – and had fun playing with my shiny pinwheels! He clearly adores his family – and they adore him too!

Can’t wait to capture his next milestones – although I’m sure mom doesn’t want that to come too quickly 😉

  • Pensacola Beach // Family Vacation Photography // Part 1

So anyone keeping track can see that I have been to the beach an amazing number of times this year. I really should have spaced things out better – I know…

But our Pensacola Beach trip was extra special. This was a trip we actually took back in April – a massive family reunion to celebrate my grandfather’s 90th birthday – which is a pretty amazing thing. He’s an amazing man – and so healthy – so it was a great time to get all of our extended family together – whom we rarely see since we live in Ak – and everyone else is basically in Alabama. It’s long day of travel for sure…

Anyway – I made a deal with my mom that I would photograph, basically, the entire week, in exchange for her keeping my kids for a week while Chris and I went to Maui for our anniversary…

And to be honest, I’m really not sure that I would have been shooting as much if I hadn’t made that deal – but I’m actually REALLY glad that I did. The images that I captured during that week are SO much fun to look back on. We rented this enormous beach house (thanks VRBO…) and it was the perfect home base for everyone. Everyone being a total of 23 adults and 7 children under the age of 5. It was crazy. But we also had the beach basically to ourselves, since it was the off season. The first couple days the weather was overcast – although still warm – but I loved the light. And the breeze. I die for an ocean breeze…DSYPhotography-5658 DSYPhotography-5490 DSYPhotography-5514 DSYPhotography-5544

This was Harper’s first trip to the beach and she was NOT having the sand. Luckily Torah was the same way when she was little, so I came prepared with some water shoes. After a couple days she got over it, thankfully! Because who wants to be on the beach with shoes?!DSYPhotography-5570 DSYPhotography-5591 DSYPhotography-5682 DSYPhotography-5700 DSYPhotography-5724

This guy – the reason for all of us being there. Yes – he’s a photographer as well. And yes, he still shoots film. Love his style! DSYPhotography-6742

I think this is the only picture of him smiling from the week. He’s a tough customer – but I did get one…DSYPhotography-5797

So obviously, a beautiful beach, great soft light – easy. But what I actually find to be my favorites, and the images I shot in the house while we were all together. Yes, the light was beautiful – but equally were the shadows. I just sort of kept my camera on my shoulder or in a quick and convenient place and kept my eyes opened. And the magic of every day life just unfolded around me. Everyone was so happy to be together, that it was just natural and perfect.

    DSYPhotography-5631 DSYPhotography-5875 DSYPhotography-6705

But OBVIOUSLY we had to do everyone’s family portraits on the beach, which was loads of fun, and we had some epic sunsets so I got some delicious golden light. Stay tuned for part 2 to see some of those…

It was such a wonderful and memorable trip – but already faded in my memory – until I look through these images and am transported back – to the smell of the salt water – the sound of the waves crashing on the shore – the delicious humidity on my skin – and of course – the warmth of being with the people I love most in the world. These images are priceless for that alone.

So… have camera. Will travel 😉

  • Seattle Family // Lifestyle Portraits at home

First of all – I absolutely love this family. I have been photographing Kip and Taunisha since they first got engaged, like a million years ago. And I adore Avery – she is the most spunky, outgoing and joyful little girl around. My kids are totally in love with her.

Side note – when visiting Avery you had better request her Sugar Plum Fairy dance, because she nails it.

Taunisha really wanted to shoot at this incredible building near their home south of Seattle and the weather and golden light were to die for – we dream of such days in Ak…

    DSYPhotography-17

And it was amazing and beautiful and we created stunning and gorgeous images!

Then we went back to the house, and in 10 minutes we created absolute perfection. As a mom, these images speak to my heart. There is so much beauty in these moments between – winding down from the grand photo-shoot adventure, everyone can just relax and be themselves – at ease.

These are the images that we will look back at (as parents) in 10 years that will bring tears to our eyes. They will spark a memory of the sound of a 3 year old’s laughter long forgotten.  The way she loved to bounce on the bed and ham it up for the camera. The way she loved with abandon.

This is life. Real life. Beautiful, messy, perfect.

  • G Family // Alaska family photography

This adorable family has been in Alaska for several years and is getting ready to be re-located with dad’s military job. They REALLY wanted to capture some Alaskan memories before they leave for their next adventure – and I was SO excited to help them achieve that!

Mom was looking for a mix of urban and scenic – so we split the session with downtown Anchorage and then hopped over to the coast to finish off with a stellar sunset and some Cook Inlet vistas.

I absolutely loved working with this family – the kids were SO sweet – they each had such fun personalities – and were totally willing to do whatever I asked of them. And SO polite!

NOTE: I just appreciate polite children so much – one of our house rules is: always say please and thank you – because really – manners just go such a long way!

More than anything – this family loves to laugh. It was no hard trick to get real smiles from these guys – they are always joking around and having fun. Which really – makes my job easy! We really did have a blast – and when it’s such a gorgeous evening – it’s hard not to leave a session like this and feel on top of the world!

Also – they are a perfect example of the “what should I wear?!” question that EVERY family asks. Myself included when we have family pics! They kept things true to their style – relaxed, stylish, comfortable and simple! And above all – not matchy-matchy! If you can’t see in these smaller web images, the boys really are not both wearing white button downs – one has a nice faded blue stripe to it – so everything looks great together – but everyone gets to be an individual too.
I especially tell moms – feel good in what you’re wearing. If you’re uncomfortable (or your kids are uncomfortable) you are going to spend the whole session thinking about when you can take off your shoes/dress/shirt, etc – and not be enjoying yourself in the moment. And you’ll probably be frowning in 90% of your pictures!

No frowns here – everyone was happy and comfortable in their skin and clothes! And we were able to focus instead on just having a great time!

These boys had me rolling – they were cracking me up with their ‘Blue Steel’ and I am pretty sure we even had some passerby’s comment on their modeling skills. So cute!

I always want to connect with families in a way that is real for them – and so I chat with parents about their children and spouses – and one of the things that really struck me about this family was how laid back everyone is.
They love to do outdoorsy things together and that inspired the shoes – even mom has her chucks and they just hanging out!

  • Telling a story // Alaska family photography

I was hanging out with my kids this weekend while my husband was out of town. A pretty chill Saturday – we had a birthday party to attend in the afternoon, so the kids had picked out their ‘birthday’ outfits and were looking pretty cute – and while we were playing I pulled out my camera and just had fun capturing a few details.

But here is the main thought that was going through my head while I was shooting: I wish I had someone here to photograph ME interacting with them! Because they wanted me to play and interact with them – and we were having a ton of fun, playing doctor, reading stories and just being.

So I’m telling their story here – rather than our story – and that’s ok, for a quick Saturday, but how much more impactful and precious would these images be with mom (or dad!) included?!

    DSYPhotography-5047 DSYPhotography-5050

My oldest is obsessed with lining things up perfectly like this… Please tell me all kids do this…!!

    DSYPhotography-5057 DSYPhotography-5065

And 5 minutes later – done – and moved on to the next mess…

While I had fun clicking away here and there, and I love some of the moments I captured – there is definitely the piece of Saturday at home with mom that is missing.

This is the story telling experience and imagery that speaks to my heart. These moments where life happens between the lines. Where we grow and play and just love each other with no agenda. Where it’s ok that the house is a disaster, because this is real. We are messy – we play and we don’t clean up after ourselves right away (because really, what’s the point with little ones?!). We probably have some fights, some tears and some pouting, and then some hugs and snuggles and love. It’s not always about every image being beautiful. It’s about every image telling a story. The story of our life.

  • Why are family photos so important?

    I’ve heard all the excuses.

    • My <family member> hates having their picture taken…
    • I need to loose <x> pounds first!
    • We just want to wait for <whatever> season before we take pictures
    • It’s just SO expensive!

    SO many excuses.

Here’s what I say to that. Phewy.

    • So your husband hates having his picture taken. That’s my job to address and work through!
    • Not happy about your weight? No worries. I’ll show you how to stand, and find the most flattering angles to photograph you.
    • This is Alaska. We have 2 seasons. Winter and Summer. I can make gorgeous images in either. Trust me.
    • It’s expensive. Yes. It’s an investment! So is getting your hair done every 6 weeks, but ladies – most of us are sitting in that salon chair anyway! And let’s use the same analogy – ladies – are you getting your hair colored and cut at great clips? Probably not. Because you recognize that you get what you pay for!

    Here’s what I also say.

Your time together as a family can change in an instant. As I write this post I have two friends in mind who recently lost family members suddenly and tragically.

There is NOTHING in the world they wouldn’t do to have one more day with these loved ones, and if they did – you had better believe they would be snapping away during those moments.

I even had the privilege to capture family photographs for one of those families just a year or so before they lost their mom. It was a humbling experience to be at the funeral and see my images plastered all over as the last memories they documented as a family. And every single one of the kids thanked me for those precious pictures. I was, obviously, moved beyond tears, but it drove home to me how IMPORTANT this is!

But there is SO much more to the story than just taking the pictures.

I read a great article from Design Aglow recently that talks specifically about how displaying family portraits helps to boost kids self esteem. This makes total sense to me. Your child’s world is shaped by their familiar surroundings, and what’s more familiar than the family home?

I know personally, my kids LOVE looking at pictures of themselves – they are still too young for me to think of it as vanity – I think it’s more about recognition and triggering memories – but perhaps too, it’s about experiencing value. The printed photograph is valuable, especially in a digital age, and when your children see you invest in that, with their image, they know that they too are valued.

I also see how images trigger memories for them – how they’ll talk about what’s happening in a picture – and smile. They always smile when we are looking at family pictures.

    DSYPhotography-4817 DSYPhotography-4814

More from the article, and psychology here: http://www.designaglow.com/blogs/design-aglow/17493452-how-family-portraits-boost-your-child-s-self-esteem

While of course, I advocate for and personally display massive amounts of family portraits on our walls – I think it’s equally important to have albums. We sit and look at albums together as a family almost once a week. My kids adore it!

Find a photographer who’s images speaks to your style and your soul and get the ball rolling!! Most full service photographers will do all of the leg work for you – we get to know your family, plan a session that will capture the important things in your life, find the location, props and provide suggestions for wardrobe, etc. It’s really pretty easy!

So there you go. No more excuses.
