Jun 28 2015 Summer Cake Smash // Anchorage Kids Photography
Little miss June is 1!! I adore this sweet family – they are absolutely the nicest people ever – but could they be any more gorgeous? I got to photograph baby June when she was just 3 months old, and we did the most beautiful fall outdoor session. So to celebrate her first birthday – we returned to the same park to let her play in the woods, eat some of her favorite snacks (blue berries) and smash a cake!
I would also like to point out that it was almost 80 degrees this particular evening – which is pretty impressive for Anchorage – and I was sweating my bum off – I am not used to shooting in such temperatures!!
On the plus side – mom and June got to wear super cute dresses with no worries about getting cold! Cause really – in Anchorage – that’s normally more of the issue…
But really – I die for these images. I love that we captured June just being herself. Obviously kids don’t normally find a cake sitting in the middle of the woods (and really kids – if you do, I would advise against just digging in… i mean – have you read Hansel and Gretel?!) – but every thing else truly was just June doing what she wanted to do! She is so easy going – happy and up for adventure! And her eyes! Oh my gosh – she has the most incredible eyes…
These are my favorite kinds of sessions. I adore this age – it’s pure magic. You can’t bring your own expectations to a 1 year old. They’re gonna do what they’re gonna do! And we are just along for the ride. But it’s always a beautiful reminder to slow down and see the world through the (adorable) eyes of a little one – to find the beauty and amazement in the smallest of things.

Jun 19 2015 First 48 // Alaska newborn and birth photography
Baby Lincoln has arrived! Perfect and precious and… late. Most moms can relate – the last few weeks of pregnancy are the worst. You are so excited to meet your little one – most of us are super uncomfortable by this point – the constant bathroom breaks, the heartburn, the swelling of feet, legs… and CANKLES! It’s not a pretty picture. And even though Lincoln’s mom looked radiant, I know she was ready to evict! So when your little one refuses to cooperate and settles in for an extra two weeks in the womb. Well. We all get a little impatient!
But finally – he arrived!
And I got to create these precious images of him in his first 48 hours of life – at the hospital meeting his brother and just settling in to life outside.
So precious – so perfect – and so loved.

Jun 09 2015 Fairy Forest Tea Party // Alaska Children’s Photography // Styled Session
My good friend Vanessa has taught me the importance of making sh!tty first drafts. I tend to be an idea girl and not so great at the execution of my personal visions. And her point to me was simply – don’t fret about all those details – just go out and shoot and make something happen!! My forest tea party vision is a work in progress, and this revision is adorable. I first hit on this idea a year ago, when my youngest turned 1 – and really – trying to plan a styled shoot with a 1 year old is… tricky… So this year I employed the help of my fabulous friend Betsy and her daughter Addie, who is the same age as my youngest – not only to force me to make this happen, but also because she has an incredible eye for detail. Plus her daughter is freaking adorable. Trying to plan a styled shoot with 2 – 2 year olds and a 4 year old is equally tricky. But I think we pulled off some beautiful images – and the girls had a lot of fun. mostly. There were some tears, but if a 2 year old goes an hour without some tears they probably with grandparents. Just saying. Is this our final version? Probably not. I’m sure I’ll revive this again in another year – and maybe with 3 and 5 year olds we will create even more magic – but for now – I love this draft.
Kids have the shortest attention spans – I swear. You would think a real tea party in the forest with cupcakes and everything would hold their interest for more than 15 minutes. But it doesn’t. Plan B – tell the kids to look for fairies in the forest. That kept them for about another 5 minutes. Until they didn’t find anything and got bored. Next time, I totally stashing glitter bombs in the forest. Lessons learned…

Apr 30 2015 Unbound Albums // Alaska Boutique Photography
I am OBSESSED.
Don’t get me wrong – I love my bound albums – but there is something so special about these Unbound Albums.
“Binding says the story is over and yet your story is still being written.”
As the stories of our lives unfold, having an heirloom place to keep those memories is a wonderful legacy to have and leave for your family for generations.
The Evan box shown below holds 4×6 prints – wrapped in antique linen, with 3 glass vials to hold any tangible memories – a lock of hair from your little one’s first hair cut… their first lost tooth… a bit of dirt from the ground of your first family home… and there’s also space to add a small item – like that first wild flower that your little one picked for you
Print options include the matte finish dry mounted images shown below, or fine art linen prints
These boxes are amish-made, dovetailed and available in several species of wood, including Cedar, Ash and Walnut.

Apr 14 2015 Telling a story // Alaska family photography
I was hanging out with my kids this weekend while my husband was out of town. A pretty chill Saturday – we had a birthday party to attend in the afternoon, so the kids had picked out their ‘birthday’ outfits and were looking pretty cute – and while we were playing I pulled out my camera and just had fun capturing a few details.
But here is the main thought that was going through my head while I was shooting: I wish I had someone here to photograph ME interacting with them! Because they wanted me to play and interact with them – and we were having a ton of fun, playing doctor, reading stories and just being.
So I’m telling their story here – rather than our story – and that’s ok, for a quick Saturday, but how much more impactful and precious would these images be with mom (or dad!) included?!
My oldest is obsessed with lining things up perfectly like this… Please tell me all kids do this…!!
And 5 minutes later – done – and moved on to the next mess…
Quick yoga break… Her forward fold is pretty impressive. Kids are so flexible!
While I had fun clicking away here and there, and I love some of the moments I captured – there is definitely the piece of Saturday at home with mom that is missing.
This is the story telling experience and imagery that speaks to my heart. These moments where life happens between the lines. Where we grow and play and just love each other with no agenda. Where it’s ok that the house is a disaster, because this is real. We are messy – we play and we don’t clean up after ourselves right away (because really, what’s the point with little ones?!). We probably have some fights, some tears and some pouting, and then some hugs and snuggles and love. It’s not always about every image being beautiful. It’s about every image telling a story. The story of our life.

Mar 14 2015 Why are family photos so important?
I’ve heard all the excuses.
- My <family member> hates having their picture taken…
- I need to loose <x> pounds first!
- We just want to wait for <whatever> season before we take pictures
- It’s just SO expensive!
SO many excuses.
Here’s what I say to that. Phewy.
- So your husband hates having his picture taken. That’s my job to address and work through!
- Not happy about your weight? No worries. I’ll show you how to stand, and find the most flattering angles to photograph you.
- This is Alaska. We have 2 seasons. Winter and Summer. I can make gorgeous images in either. Trust me.
- It’s expensive. Yes. It’s an investment! So is getting your hair done every 6 weeks, but ladies – most of us are sitting in that salon chair anyway! And let’s use the same analogy – ladies – are you getting your hair colored and cut at great clips? Probably not. Because you recognize that you get what you pay for!
Here’s what I also say.
Your time together as a family can change in an instant. As I write this post I have two friends in mind who recently lost family members suddenly and tragically.
There is NOTHING in the world they wouldn’t do to have one more day with these loved ones, and if they did – you had better believe they would be snapping away during those moments.
I even had the privilege to capture family photographs for one of those families just a year or so before they lost their mom. It was a humbling experience to be at the funeral and see my images plastered all over as the last memories they documented as a family. And every single one of the kids thanked me for those precious pictures. I was, obviously, moved beyond tears, but it drove home to me how IMPORTANT this is!
But there is SO much more to the story than just taking the pictures.
I read a great article from Design Aglow recently that talks specifically about how displaying family portraits helps to boost kids self esteem. This makes total sense to me. Your child’s world is shaped by their familiar surroundings, and what’s more familiar than the family home?
I know personally, my kids LOVE looking at pictures of themselves – they are still too young for me to think of it as vanity – I think it’s more about recognition and triggering memories – but perhaps too, it’s about experiencing value. The printed photograph is valuable, especially in a digital age, and when your children see you invest in that, with their image, they know that they too are valued.
I also see how images trigger memories for them – how they’ll talk about what’s happening in a picture – and smile. They always smile when we are looking at family pictures.
More from the article, and psychology here: http://www.designaglow.com/blogs/design-aglow/17493452-how-family-portraits-boost-your-child-s-self-esteem
While of course, I advocate for and personally display massive amounts of family portraits on our walls – I think it’s equally important to have albums. We sit and look at albums together as a family almost once a week. My kids adore it!
Find a photographer who’s images speaks to your style and your soul and get the ball rolling!! Most full service photographers will do all of the leg work for you – we get to know your family, plan a session that will capture the important things in your life, find the location, props and provide suggestions for wardrobe, etc. It’s really pretty easy!
So there you go. No more excuses.

Jan 15 2015 Waiting for Sarah // Alaska maternity photography
What a seriously crazy fall in Alaska… where is the snow?! No one knows. But i’ll take the opportunity to capture some cold and clear images of beauty!
I adore Angie and her hubs Michael. These two – could they be any more adorable? They are SOOO excited for their little bundle of babieness to arrive – and I’ll admit, I’m pretty stoked to meet her too!
I also think that these might be the most gorgeous maternity images I’ve ever had the pleasure of creating – so there’s also that.
Here is your eye candy for the day!

Jan 08 2015 Birth Photography // Providence Alaska
Oh how I love birth photography! I’m still very new to this genre but it has stolen my heart and I so look forward to doing more and more in this new year!
I just adore this mama. Karaina is herself a doula and very in tune with the birthing process. This was her second babe and she very much wanted to capture the experience visually. I think most moms – myself included! often don’t think about or don’t know that birth photography is a ‘thing’! We are so nervous about the whole birth thing that we assume the last thing we will want is someone clicking away in the background distracting us or even worse, getting some raunchy and traumatizing images…
But I assure you – that is not what birth photography is about. This is about capturing the emotion. And that’s why I love it so much. There aren’t a whole lot of moments more powerful than being present for the arrival of a new little one. Moms are amazing. Babies are amazing – and the process of bringing new babies into the world, well… the images speak for themselves.
A huge congrats to this beautiful and amazing family, and for their willingness to let me share their images!
