Apr 16 2016 LAUNCHING!! // Bye, Bye DSY // Hello Evoke Images
If you’ve been following me on facebook or instagram, you’ve probably seen a few posts in recent weeks with the hash tag #byebyeDSY
The official go-live for Evoke Images is here!
I’m so excited to say good bye to DSY Photography (don’t get me wrong – I still love my initials – just, as my initials!) I have put so much work into this re-brand, and I’m really excited about what Evoke means and what the future holds!
My amazing friend Jess, the founder of Design Scout in Chicago gave me some fantastic pointers to get me going on this project. One of the most helpful things she asked me to do was to describe my favorite day at work. What makes me tick. What gets my creativity going, and what am I truly passionate about?
For me that came down to stories. My favorite sessions are those where we work together to create and capture moments that are real.I just told a client today – I’m here to create opportunities for you, as a family, to have a fun and natural interaction – to do things that you love – and from there, creating images is actually the easiest part of the equation!
Part of why I am so driven to this work is from watching my littles grow, so quickly. None of us are perfect parents – we all fail, more often than we’d like to admit – but there is more than enough negativity and shaming in the world. Spending time together with NO AGENDA other than having fun together – well, to be honest, that’s kind of a gift all on it’s own.
We put away our phones and distractions and just focus on each other – for an hour or two – we laugh until we cry, there are hugs and kisses, tickles and cuddles, usually there are snacks (because, um food!?)

And at the end of all that, you have beautiful images to treasure for a lifetime. And these images will be a beautiful reminder that in spite of the days where you didn’t have it all together, there’s a lot of days where there are more kisses and laughter than tears.
That’s the best gift we can give to our families
And that is my passion.
So welcome to Evoke Images.
e·voke /əˈvōk/ To bring or recall to the conscious mind.
Evoke Images is about capturing stories. Creating images that transport you back in time. Images that allow you to to relive the moments of family, life, and love that pass so quickly.

Apr 15 2016 Baby Owen // Newborn Photography Studio Session
This little nugget came with the cutest accessories! Her momma is the mind behind Hatcher Press, and as you would expect, brought the cutest accessories! Those overalls – oh my!! And they were nice and big, so I think we’ll see them again when she’s a little older! So fun to have things that can be used for multiple shoots.
Baby O was not my biggest fan – she is definitely a momma’s girl – but she finally gave me a few minutes of sleep after i wrapped her up well. She is so cute though – worth working for!
Her chubby little cheeks are just my favorite! SQUISH!

Apr 04 2016 Welcome baby Adeline // First 48 Photography // Anchorage, Alaska
I am pretty sure i have never in my life seen a baby born with more hair than baby Adeline! Even though I’m pretty sure doctors say the amount of heart burn you have in pregnancy is NOT related – her mother assured me that in her case it definitely was!
She is absolutely adorably perfect though – and I had the pleasure of photographing her about 3 hours after her debut into the world, and capture her very first meeting with her big brother!

Jan 17 2016 Newborns at Home // Anchorage Lifestyle baby photography
I have been photographing this adorable family for years – and truly I love them! I know that baby Wesley is their last little one, so it was super important to capture some truly meaningful images of their littlest babe.
What I especially love about newborn sessions at home is the opportunity it gives other family members (like siblings!) to remain in their element. Big brothers got to hang out, and be themselves, while everyone basked in the glow of having a new family member to show off and adore!
It is probably the most relaxed session you can have! I know moms always stress a little bit about having a “clean house” – but it’s really not that important! We just stash the clutter in a closet and move on. No fuss, no muss!

Jan 10 2016 7 months // Baby Milestone Session // Alaska baby photographer
So often as parents we get into this mindset that we need to document babies lives based on their age. But truly – babies first year is about milestones! Every baby sits at a different age, crawls at a different age, and even walks at a different age!
I love capturing the sitting up milestone – babies still have those adorable rolls that disappear quickly after they start to crawl! And they will actually sit still – because they can’t crawl away quite yet! It’s such a fun and adorable moment to capture in time.
And of course- it’s the perfect time to get the whole family in to get some sibling as well as mom & dad images!
Baby Lincoln was a dream – so chunky and perfect! He sits up like a champ – and had fun playing with my shiny pinwheels! He clearly adores his family – and they adore him too!
Can’t wait to capture his next milestones – although I’m sure mom doesn’t want that to come too quickly 😉

Dec 09 2015 Baby Lucy // Anchorage Studio Newborn Photography
Babies! Babies! It’s been a slow summer for babies this year – but come fall, sweet babes started to arrive! And I FINALLY got the chance to use the vintage pram that my lovely friend Vanessa Powell gifted me. It was her grandmother’s and I have been DYING for a chance to photograph a little one in it!
Baby Lucy is also (drum roll please!) the very first babe I’ve gotten to photograph in my new studio space! She is a gorgeous teeny-tiny little babe – and isn’t her silky, shiny hair to die for!
Her big brothers are pretty in love with her – I just adore them all – they are the sweetest family you could meet – and I just love the images that we created!

Nov 23 2015 Pensacola Beach // Family Vacation Photography // Part 1
So anyone keeping track can see that I have been to the beach an amazing number of times this year. I really should have spaced things out better – I know…
But our Pensacola Beach trip was extra special. This was a trip we actually took back in April – a massive family reunion to celebrate my grandfather’s 90th birthday – which is a pretty amazing thing. He’s an amazing man – and so healthy – so it was a great time to get all of our extended family together – whom we rarely see since we live in Ak – and everyone else is basically in Alabama. It’s long day of travel for sure…
Anyway – I made a deal with my mom that I would photograph, basically, the entire week, in exchange for her keeping my kids for a week while Chris and I went to Maui for our anniversary…
And to be honest, I’m really not sure that I would have been shooting as much if I hadn’t made that deal – but I’m actually REALLY glad that I did. The images that I captured during that week are SO much fun to look back on. We rented this enormous beach house (thanks VRBO…) and it was the perfect home base for everyone. Everyone being a total of 23 adults and 7 children under the age of 5. It was crazy. But we also had the beach basically to ourselves, since it was the off season. The first couple days the weather was overcast – although still warm – but I loved the light. And the breeze. I die for an ocean breeze…

This was Harper’s first trip to the beach and she was NOT having the sand. Luckily Torah was the same way when she was little, so I came prepared with some water shoes. After a couple days she got over it, thankfully! Because who wants to be on the beach with shoes?!

This guy – the reason for all of us being there. Yes – he’s a photographer as well. And yes, he still shoots film. Love his style!

I think this is the only picture of him smiling from the week. He’s a tough customer – but I did get one…

So obviously, a beautiful beach, great soft light – easy. But what I actually find to be my favorites, and the images I shot in the house while we were all together. Yes, the light was beautiful – but equally were the shadows. I just sort of kept my camera on my shoulder or in a quick and convenient place and kept my eyes opened. And the magic of every day life just unfolded around me. Everyone was so happy to be together, that it was just natural and perfect.

But OBVIOUSLY we had to do everyone’s family portraits on the beach, which was loads of fun, and we had some epic sunsets so I got some delicious golden light. Stay tuned for part 2 to see some of those…
It was such a wonderful and memorable trip – but already faded in my memory – until I look through these images and am transported back – to the smell of the salt water – the sound of the waves crashing on the shore – the delicious humidity on my skin – and of course – the warmth of being with the people I love most in the world. These images are priceless for that alone.
So… have camera. Will travel 😉

Conceptual Magazine Cover // Baths of Milk // Creative Photography
So in the loads of spare time that I have (oh man, I can barely even write that sentence… hah!) I try and devote a bit of space to my personal creative work. Which does often involve my kids, but not always.
My background in photography actually started in Fine Art. I didn’t get into portraiture until my friends began having children and I saw the amazing connection that family has and I had to begin capturing it. But even before that – I’ve always needed a human element to my images. I’m not much of a landscape photographer – my eye just doesn’t work that way – but creative portraiture – well, that calls to me.
I was scrolling through facebook one afternoon and came upon an image by one of my favorites, Jessica Drossin. It was a gorgeous image of a lovely dark haired model in a milky pool of water. I was mesmerized.
I immediately messaged my mentor and friend, Vanessa Powell (who is an amazing creative artist and photographer) and said – I want to do this. How do I do this?
She laughed and said she would love to help me.
A couple days later, Vanessa sent me a link to Conceptual Magazine, and as it happened, they were looking for submissions for their 4th issue, and guess what the theme was? Baths of Milk. Oh yeah! So now, not only did I have a vision, I had a timeline! So we scheduled our shoot!
Vanessa’s lovely daughter Natalie agreed to be one of my models and Samantha, a model friend of hers also agreed to come over and let me dunk her in milk.
Side Note: milk baths are actually super good for your skin. So – really, it was like a spa day for them! Really!
It ended up being a super sunny day, which was totally not was I was looking for, but Vanessa has a perfect car port with lovely shade, so we setup under that and ran a hose from her utility sink to give our ladies WARM water for their bath. Because God knows I wasn’t going to ask them to lay down in a pool full of freezing water for half an hour… Actually, I totally would have – but thankfully i didn’t have to!
And I spent the next half hour perched precariously on top of a ladder, holding my camera as far away from my body as possible and praying to get these shots.
Samantha’s lovely mother came along to check out the action and took some awesome BTW images. So here you can see exactly what shenanigans we had going on:

Everyone asks – How much milk did you use?!?!
Answer: Really, not that much! 2 gallons was all – the rest was water – and that was plenty to give the water the perfect amount of cloudiness
The series is titled Amor Matris – translated to Mother’s Love
The inspiration and concept is the bond of love between mother and daughter – unbreakable and unlike any force on earth. A mother longs for her daughter, births and nurtures her. And she grows – into a child and then, a woman.
And here are my final images, that I submitted to the publication

After submission, of course, I had to wait like a month to find out if they would even make it in! When I was contacted by Rocio Mireles, the director of the magazine that I had made it in, I was so excited! Obviously. And I waited very impatiently for the release date on Nov 1.
Nov 1 was a Sunday, and a daylight saving Sunday no less, so the kids got up extra early, and I had pulled them into our bed for a movie to delay the inevitable demands for breakfast. I turned on my phone and saw the notification that the magazine was out! And then I saw the cover. My cover. My heart stopped for a hot minute. I got the cover?! I got the freaking cover!?!?! I literally hopped out of bed and started jumping around. And then promptly blew up my social media all about it.
So, check out what Conceptual Magazine is all about here and if you feel like purchasing a copy, that would be super cool too. Obviously I did!

Oct 31 2015 Happy Halloween // Anchorage Kids Portraits
I adore Halloween. It’s one of my very favorite holidays! Although i totally hate scary movies – so… go figure…
The costumes, the decorations – the whole deal – it’s just so much fun! And truly – I think that’s what i love about it. It’s just for fun! An opportunity for everyone to dress up as anything they like – and really go all out – and just own it. I think if I had lived in a place where it was going on, I would totally have been into the comic-con thing – but alas, I missed out on all that excitement…
And even though they seriously change their minds every 5 minutes about what they want to ‘be’ – i love doing Halloween with my kiddos.
This year Torah decided she wanted to be a pumpkin. I was pretty cool with that, at least she didn’t say she wanted to be Elsa… because for real – the Elsa costumes are like 3 times more than any other princess. Can we say racket?
Anyway – pumpkin was something i could get behind – and Harper just kept saying she wanted to dress up. Whenever I suggested anything after that phrase (dress up as _____) she would yell “NO! I want to DRESS UP!” so i wasn’t quite sure if she even understood the concept – and i made the executive decision to go with 2 pumpkin costumes, because really – chances were good that when push came to shove Harper was going to want to be whatever Torah was.
so – a little google search of “easy no sew pumpkin costumes” set me on the path to these super easy creations. They totally refused to wear the hats we made, but we had fun making them anyway. The original design was for plain orange t-shirts and you made the jack-o-lantern faces with black self adhesive foam – but target had the shirts with the glitter faces already on them, so… WIN!! I had already decided I wasn’t going to bother with the elastic on the bottom and stuffing the shirts, cause I know my kids. They would HATE that. Some sparkly tutus and wham. Done.
Then pictures – oye ve- it was like pulling teeth! I literally had to sit there with Reeses Pieces to get them to cooperate. I was getting a whole lot of this:

And then they started to get silly… which is far better than the previous, but still – can you just LOOK at me?!?!

And this was the best we did. Good enough – I’ll take it! They made me work for it though…

Oct 28 2015 Polaroid Rebooted // Fuji Instax // Family Stories
When I was in the Bahamas this summer (yes – that’s right, more on that here…) one of my traveling companions had this amazing instant camera and it was so much fun! I decided I HAD to get one.
Amazon prime and 3 days later, my Instax was in my hot little hands and I was loading up a pack of film and ready to try it out! And no – I’m not being sponsored by Fuji, so let’s just make that clear. But I would certainly accept any complimentary film that they want to send my way!
The best part is how magical this process was to, my kids a little, but really, to my friends!
We had a little pumpkin carving get together with some fellow parents and everyone was in love with this thing.
I think the kids were less than impressed, but those of us who actually lived in the age of Polaroid were having some awesome moments of nostalgia.
These babies are just like the old ones – the quality is total crap – and they make your skin look amazing – and they are absolutely perfect.
So perfect, I even had to write the month and year on them – cause – that’s how we did it in the 80’s…I think my favorite part is that in every single one, someone is either not looking, blinking, making a terrible face – whatever – it’s the imperfection that just reminds me exactly of how we used to roll – we didn’t see the image and immediately retake it because someone wasn’t looking. What you got is what you got. These are the real, un-edited and mostly un-coerced moments (I mean, obviously you are yelling at the kids – look at MEEEE!!!!!)
And forgive the light spots – these things are ridiculously shiny and I was just trying to grab iphone pics of them to post here.
Warning: The red eye with the flash on this thing is pretty awful. It’s the real deal baby – no pre-flash red eye reduction here!
